Protests happen when things are getting worse, not when they’re objectively bad. So we have the oil-free Arab countries that are suffering in this time of high commodity prices, Iran with its recently stolen election, and Libya with an oil boom that unlike in previous times did not benefit the general population at all.Yes, the Palestinians are more humiliated than the Syrians (for example). Sorry. Syria does not have a class of overlords who get to do what they want like the settlers or the pogromchiks. Neither did Iran (not an Arab country though ) until people started protesting the regime, and then the Basij militia really did start beating up people at random in order to establish dominance. Egypt and Libya have nothing of the sort right now, for the rather obvious reason that their current governments are interim caretaker governments (but, sure, they haven’t had elections yet).You’re right that humiliation is a relative thing, but this is exactly what I’m getting at with the slavery comment. People are at their most humiliated when they’re right up across the wall from people who are vastly richer than they are. (It’s what Martin Luther King referred to as first-world poverty being more frustrating in a way than third-world poverty.) This is especially true when they’re under the sovereignty of the same government whether they’re actual slaves, people under colonialism, or people under a neverending occupation.The Kurds aren’t Arabs. But I’m astonished at how anti-human rights people on both sides make their claims about Kurdish and Palestinian self-determination purely based on great power geopolitics. Pro-American and pro-Israeli anti-human rights people support the Kurds and oppose the Palestinians, like clockwork; the anti-American international left does exactly the opposite, again like clockwork.
